Scrolling through the lives of others on Facebook, Instagram, SnapChat and Tik Tok had me thinking deeply this morning. Social media has a hold on everyone. The world has become technology dependent. It seems I know more about a person from the internet than I do about them in person.
Twenty some years ago, we as people took time to call, visit or write a letter. Those days are long gone. We now wake up each morning and scroll the internet to see what everyone is up too. We read their posts, check out their photos, watch their videos and we think we know them just by scrolling through. This is so not the case.
My husband posted a nice photo of himself sitting on the deck soaking in the sun and saying it’s nice to be retired. But is it really? Did you totally believe what you saw and read? Was this his way of coping with his own reality of living on a life support? Only him and I know that he really doesn’t like the way he retired. The happiness in the photo was in that moment and he captured it, but what came later was the true reality of being medically retired.
The heat exhaustion that followed, the throwing up, the not feeling good, being light headed and the reality of the life support he has to carry around the rest of his life was still there and not present in the photo. So when you are scrolling and seeing the good times, do you ever wonder if it’s all for show? Do people post things to make them feel better about a bad situation? Can being retired with a terminal medical condition really be the way someone wants to live life?
The truth of the whole social media has me thinking that life is what you want people to believe and not what it really is. I wish he could post the truth of his life but then people would feel sorry for him and he would feel even less of a man than he already is. So as you scroll through pages of social media, look deeper into the whole picture. Because what you see may be just what they want you to see and not the struggles that they face each day.
Be kind always, the struggle of life is hard and trying to make everyone think you are okay is the hardest struggle of all. I’ve been there and still am. Hugs to all who need it today.
