Eyes to the Soul

Did you ever make eye contact with a stranger and seen the sadness in their soul. I’ve seen that today. Standing in line at the ice cream shop, a man sitting on the bench eating his ice cream made eye contact with me and his sadness was so apparent. He forced a smile and continued to eat. I couldn’t help but wonder why he was so sad.

I placed my order and moved to the next window. A car blaring loud music drove by at that moment and I shook my head as did the stranger. I said to him, “you are probably thinking what I’m thinking about the music”. He replied, “No honey. I’m thinking that you are the most beautiful woman I’ve seen since my sweetie passed away in May and I am sure you are already taken”. His eyes welled up with tears and he said, “but thank you for the smile, I haven’t smiled in months.”

I stood speechless and didn’t know what to say to him. I patted him on the back and said I was sorry for his loss. Seemed so pointless to say because nothing anyone could have said would of eased his pain, his soul was lost and sad without her and I seen that sadness when I looked in his eyes.

Take the time to smile at a stranger, it could change the way they feel even if it’s only for a moment. Wish I could of eased his pain forever but I know he saw happiness in that moment and a smile from a stranger made a difference in his world. Be kind.
