One year ago today my husband was implanted with his LVAD. As I sat in that waiting room scared, filled with fear and not knowing what the future would hold, not knowing if Joe would live, here we are a year later and HE’S ALIVE.
This past year has had it’s ups and downs. The first few months were a constant struggle to manage his INR, to get his body nourished, to stop the vomiting, to make sure he took all his meds, to change his driveline bandage and avoid at all cost an infection, schedule his appointments, get him motivated and to stay motivated to fight everyday to just LIVE.
I say we have accomplished all of the above. Although we have a few set backs with the vomiting, overall we have done very well with what we were handed a YEAR ago. Joe is stronger than he will ever know and he is the reason he is still here. I may do most of the leg work but he is the true fighter in this amazing journey.
I call it an Amazing Journey because everyday amazes me with new opportunities that we probably would of never had the chance to do in our old life. The LVAD created a new life for us. An endless adventure that has brought us closer together. It’s OUR amazing journey and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
As any Journey it’s not always easy to adapt to something unknown and unfamiliar to you, but we have managed to adjust and just let things happen as they will. We have decided that whatever life has in store for us is what was intended all along. We are strong and capable of making it part of the journey. You can’t change fate, you can only learn to let go and let God.
Our amazing journey is far from over as we now know Joe is very capable of traveling. This month we had decided to make a trip to see our son in North Dakota. This journey would entail driving across four states to get there and traveling isn’t as easy with an LVAD patient but we did it and he survived, I survived. We can do anything.
I cannot wait to see where this Amazing Journey takes us next. Here’s to next year and all the memories we will make together. I love you Joe.
